I have always been one not afraid of color but it was only after moving from Michigan to Oklahoma that I felt inspired to mix and match colors and patterns; not only in the things I design but in the room I have decided to design things in.
THIS is where I create and the first room you see when you
walk into our home in Owasso, Oklahoma.
Patterns and Textures and Colors....Oh My
The first thing I made while mixing patterns and color was a journal. I showed my mom the two different looks I wanted and she gave a look only a mom can give; and not get a look right back. I then decided to make an apron with four different fabrics; none of them matching in color, print, or texture.....again mom gave the look; UNTIL it was finished. She loved the way it turned out but said "It is nothing I would have thought to put together, but it works." Thus, my design style was born. An ecclectic mix of pattern and fun, color and texture, design and "I'm not sure what that is but I like it." It is especially fun to come up with scripture that matches each creation. The pocket of this Couture apron says "Taste and see that the Lord is good." I giggle at the thought of how witty Jesus and I can be when we are in our Creative happy place; that I am happy to share. There are no two aprons alike; just the way Jesus intended us. We are each a creation in Him so why shouldn't my aprons, totes, sleeves, and even Couture bras be the same. (Promise to share more information on the Couture Bras for a Cause line soon).
My Space
(Not to be confused with that long forgotten site that is Jurassic Park to the Facebook generation)
There are so many things about my space that I love, I really couldn't pick just one to share. Some are Pinterest pirates and others are random thoughts that became reality when I woke my hubby up at 3am to share. (He loves those moments by the way). I pick up random things and never see it as it is but what I want it to become; birdhouses into lamps, pipes and fence into a shelf, a 50" oval table becoming a semi sofa table with piano music holder back, or a damaged dresser left in 6inches of water in someone's backyard. Scroll through a few of the pictures of my space and tell me what you think. Just remember that I sew, build, paint, and repurpose; I am NOT a photographer. It is my hope that my skills will get better and this time next year we will all laugh at this first real blog entry and say "Remember when?"
Love this blah IKEA bookshelf turned funky "stuff" holder. I cheated and cut up one piece of fence to fit measurements of the back of bookshelf, rather than take apart a pallet as seen on Pinterest boards. It was impossible to take off enough without damaging each piece and instead of adding four screws per board for entire length of shelving unit; my husband and I were able to attach entire thing with about eight screws in total. We also used "L" brackets to attach to wall since it is quite a bit heavier with the wooden back.
Notice the great iron detail on top. Got lucky finding this on sale at Hobby Lobby for just $10. Took a chance that it would be a close enough width to top off the shelves and it was the EXACT size needed. Who knew?
I know what they say..."Less is More" and sometimes I even believe it. But, my walls were naked for so long that now they love the extra attention, color, and dimensions they have. A moss covered "L", a bra hanging from a curtain rod, a window just waiting to be a project, and vintage Steve Madden pumps covered in sequins; a framed sign underneath reading; "We can make our plans...But the Lord determines our steps." Proverbs 16:9. I love the color of the wall that was a gallon of Oops paint found at Home Depot for just $7.00; and that was a paint AND primer.
(Whenever you are in Home Depot, always cruise by the paint section to see what they have. Gallons - $7, Quarts - $2, Samples - .50)
I love stacking and layering. Big coffee table books are great for raising up items; adding dimension, height, and interest. To think that I picked up this oversized crackle vase for just $6 makes it even better.
A perfectly tiffany blue typewriter that even works. Picked this find up for just $5, complete with carrying case. Since I am a person who writes (refusing to call myself a writer), I love using letters and typewriters as props and decor. I printed off a great Audrey Hepburn quote in my favorite (obviously not typed in my typewriter) font. "I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles."
At the risk of being entirely too wordy and sharing even more pictures that probably don't do my awesome room justice, I am going to end this entry here but will share the rest of my room tomorrow; a dresser, a wall, a chalkboard.....and a flying pig.

Love it ALL.
